At five months pregnant with her first baby, Roxanne Davis moved to Houston, Texas and was welcomed into her community by a wonderful 200-member moms group called Heights Kids. She volunteered to coordinate the Infants Playgroup and found herself becoming more and more involved with the group’s leadership. Before long, Roxanne became a Group Administrator for Heights Kids. The group continued to grow - mostly due to word of mouth - and now boasts a membership more than 750 families.
In 2008, Roxanne’s family was transferred to Doha, Qatar. She found that there were a number of playgroups around Doha, but they were just that - playgroups - you would go to playgroup, you would leave after a couple of hours, and that was that until the next one was held.
Roxanne also found some wonderful online forums that organized in-person events for women. The existing forums were public, which meant that very few people were willing to post sensitive questions or share personal information in the forums. All in all, while the existing groups make undeniably valuable contributions to the expat women in Doha, they are not dedicated moms groups.
She began speaking with other moms that she met in Doha and found there to be a great deal of interest in a group like Heights Kids, so she founded Doha Expat Mums & Kids - now called Doha Mums. Expat mums in Doha hailing from all corners of the globe attended her playgroups, and within weeks more than fifty mums from twenty countries had joined the group. (See About Us for the current count of our members and their home countries!)
Doha Mums is continuing to grow and we are always open to new members. We hope you enjoy our special group as much as we do, and we’ll look forward to meeting you soon.
