Qatar Rail marks 3rd anniversary of Doha Metro
Qatar Rail Company (Qatar Rail) marked the third anniversary of the launch of the preview service of Doha Metro, which has become a key transportation choice for the country’s residents and visitors, and the backbone of the integrated public transport system in Qatar.
On May 8, 2019, Qatar Rail started the preview service of Doha Metro with 13 stations on the Red Line, starting from Al Qassar station in the north to Al Wakra station in the south. The three Metro lines that form the current network were fully operational by September 2020.
Doha Metro services have witnessed continuous growth since their launch. More than 1.5mn Travel Cards (standard and goldclub) have been sold from Day 1 up until March 2022, Qatar Rail said in a press statement Saturday.
“With the ongoing support and wise guidance of the Qatar leadership, the Ministry of Transport and other partners, Doha Metro has witnessed remarkable success and continuous operational achievements year after year,” the statement noted.
Doha Metro gained the trust of residents and visitors of the country by providing a safe, modern, advanced and sustainable transport service that allowed passengers to move easily between key attractions and destinations in the country.
“Over the past three years, Qatar Rail has been keen to build national capacities in its projects by investing in resources, providing opportunities for training and career development in this new sector, thereby ensuring that Qatari talents are empowered and enabled to contribute to the success of these national projects,” the statement said.
Qatar Rail has also committed itself to providing a seamless travel experience through accompanying services such as metrolink and metroexpress. Over three years, the metrolink route network has grown from 13 routes to 43 routes, covering areas around Metro stations.
Further to this, the metroexpress service currently covers seven Metro stations: DECC, West Bay – QE, Al Qassar, Katara, Legtaifiya, Qatar University and Al Waab QLM, in addition to five stations on the Orange Line of Lusail Tram. In comparison, only two Metro stations were serviced by metroexpress when it was launched in July 2019.
Doha Metro has also played an important role in the success of a various major events. The third anniversary of the launch of Doha Metro coincides with the company’s operational readiness programme for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Doha Metro will provide a seamless transport experience for football fans to reach the World Cup stadiums with ease, in addition to providing an ideal transport option for visitors and fans throughout tournament to key destinations in Qatar.
Special Third Anniversary Day Pass
Qatar Rail is offering a special Third Anniversary Day Pass for use on May 8, 9 and 10, allowing passengers to travel for the entire day for QR3.
“On Sunday, we celebrate the three-year anniversary of Doha Metro! We couldn’t have done it without you, our valued customers. To show our appreciation, we are offering a 3 for 3,” Qatar Rail said in an announcement on the Doha Metro & Lusail Tram Twitter page.
“Purchase a special Third Anniversary Day Pass and travel all day for only QR3! Available on the 8th, 9th and 10th of May 2022 only,” it added.
The Day Pass can be obtained from Travel Card vending machines and goldclub offices.
